This is one of Kato Tai's early works, but nevertheless quite sophisticated. You could also spot several elements which re-occur in his later works. For example, Kato Tai presented his characters in a succinct way, letting almost all important characters show up in the beginning of the film. This strategy was also used effectively in his Kaidan Oiwa no borei, which, imoh, is the most novel adaptation of the famed Yotsuya Kaidan folklore. But the strategy also creates suspense in this film as the characters' identities and motives are unclear at the moment. The film also features some ingenious graphic matches and an interesting use of sound effect which was quite rare in late 50s' jidaigeki as well as occasionally some low angel shots which became ubiquitous in his later works. And i don't need to mention there is always a sort of visual sophistication, which makes his films stand out and a pleasure to watch.
